Bridge Design and Construction Projects

Country: Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua Date Range: 2008-2012 Project Lead: Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences Notre Dame Collaborators: College of Engineering

Notre Dame Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences faculty and students partnered with Bridges to Prosperity (B2P) to design and construct bridges in Peña Blanca, Honduras; Palquí, Guatemala; and San Fransisco, Esteli, Nicaragua. Notre Dame faculty and engineering students conducted a site visit to conduct community planning meetings, perform a site survey, and develop the design for the bridge site. In partnership with B2P, Notre Dame faculty and students assisted with the construction of the bridge, including the anchors, the cable placement, the approaches, and decking. Notre Dame and B2P seek to empower rural communities in developing countries by enabling them to continue building bridges, and partnering with local organizations to train in the footbridge technology.
