Community Based Learning & Research Program

Country: Chile Date Range: 1993-Present Project Lead: Center for Social Concerns

Since 1993, the Center for Social Concerns at the University of Notre Dame, in collaboration with the Office for International Studies, has offered a Community Based Learning (CBL) course on poverty and development in Chile. The Center for Social Concerns also conducts CBL courses in Europe. CBL course models include Community Based Research (CBR) in which faculty work with community partners to identify research needs of the local community or organization and work collaboratively on the research goal. CBR is a collaborative process between academic researchers and community members that aims to generate social action and social change through the use of multiple knowledge sources and research methods. The research question typically originates from the community, and the process allows for meaningful participation by community partners at all levels of research.
