Natural Resources and Peacebuilding Research Initiative

Country: Colombia, the Great Lakes region of Africa, and the Philippines Date Range: 2014-Present Project Lead: Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies

The Catholic Peacebuilding Network (CPN) coordinates this research project, which attends to the role of land ownership and natural resources in driving armed conflict and, alternatively, in contributing to a just and sustainable peace. CPN partners in Mindanao (the Philippines), Colombia, and the Great Lakes Region of Africa collaborate to connect leaders and scholars from different geographical zones, to build the capacity of regional Church partners such as universities, and to elicit scholarly attention to this issue through the lenses of Catholic ethics and peacebuilding. This research maps Catholic engagement in natural resource and land issues at various levels, in various sectors; compiles “promising practices”; and develops scholarly publications that consider natural resource management as a peacebuilding issue through the lens of Catholic social ethics.
