Read Haiti: Scaling Early Grade Reading Improvement in Haiti

Funded by: USAID Country: Haiti Project Lead: Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE)

Following the successful implementation of a reading curriculum 47 Catholic schools within two regions of Haiti, with strong performance on a randomized control trial evaluation, the partners supporting Haitian Catholic education are launching Read Haiti, a campaign to improve reading and writing outcomes for Haitian children. Initially, this will involve scaling promising early grade reading and writing interventions in Haiti in at least 1,000 schools over the next 5 years while continuously refining and strengthening the methods for implementation and program design.

With USAID support, and led by the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) in partnership with the Notre Dame Initiative for Global Development and the Kellogg Foundation, the Read Haiti partners propose to achieve the following goals:

  1. Improve writing and reading skills (phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension) in Creole and French by end of 3rd grade in 150 schools (120 Catholic schools and 30 public schools) in the South and Grand-Anse Departments of Haiti over the next four years.

  2. Increase access to quality educator training approaches and tools for public and private stakeholders, and strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of National Education and Professional Formation (MENFP) to support quality literacy programming in Haiti.
