Reconciliation in the Great Lakes Region of Africa

Funded by: John Templeton Foundation Country: The Great Lakes Region of Africa Date Range: 2010-2013 Project Lead: Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies

The Kroc Institute received a grant from the John Templeton Foundation to better understand prospects for reconciliation in the Great Lakes Region of Africa and to contribute to the capacity of the Catholic Church (one of the region’s most important civil society institutions) to promote reconciliation. The Kroc Institute-based Catholic Peacebuilding Network (CPN) worked with the Catholic bishops’ conferences in the Great Lakes Region to complete a needs assessment and develop a 40-page strategic plan for peace and reconciliation in the region. The CPN supported this process by providing short courses in peace and reconciliation to high-level leaders, conducting extensive interviews, and facilitating workshops on such topics as integrating peacebuilding into university curricula. The plan was approved and adopted by all eight bishops’ conferences and is now being implemented. The knowledge gained from this initiative was shared both at a 2013 conference and in articles and book chapters produced by core team members.
