The Andes: A Turbulent Zone

Funded by: Ford Foundation Country: Andean Region Date Range: 2002-2003 Project Lead: Kellogg Institute for International Studies

Funding from the Ford Foundation allowed an international team of scholars to research the dilemmas facing democracies in Andean countries. In academic year 2002-2003, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies and FLACSO-Ecuador co-sponsored a seminar in Quito on “Constitutional and Electoral Reforms and their Effects on the Political Systems in the Andean Countries.” The grant also funded travel within the Andean region for scholars from leading research centers to facilitate the exchange of information and insights. Scholars from Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela traveled beyond their homelands to other Andean countries in order to conduct and share research on matters related to democratic governance, including the role of indigenous movements.
